Albany is a beautiful city with an abundance of potential. But potential is like a bag of rocks. Over time the bag becomes too heavy a burden to carry. The goal of Alternative Albany is to lighten the load with ideas and a community of shared goals and opportunities. Like many similar American cities, Albany did not foresee nor prepare for the dislocations and impact of globalization. Despite excellent conventional attempts to sustain or improve economic conditions, the city retreated into distinct and separate communities.
The sudden economic misfortune uncovered the reality of Albany. Wealth creation revealed itself as being limited to a smaller and smaller segment of the city. Home ownership and poverty came to dominate the cityscape. Educational opportunities and the community as a whole once again became segregated. Everyone wants Albany to progress but finding a common mission to build around and a plan for implementation has been difficult to realize. Alternative Albany is an effort to provide the residents of Albany with information and decisions that are not widely distributed among the population of the city. It is also to provide a forum where everyone can comment on the workings of government or the organizations that impact Albany.
